7. The Holy Spirit

7. The Theology of the Holy Spirit
7.1 Rule of Faith
  • A distinct person within the Trinity
  • Especially associated with God's omnipresence
  • Draws us toward salvation, convicts of sin
  • A seal of ownership, guarantee of inheritance, down payment of coming age
  • Unifier of body of Christ
  • Basis of Spiritual power and gifts
  • Instrument of spiritual cleansing and sanctification
  • Leader into truth
7.2 The Spirit in the Old Testament
  • Personhood is still ambiguous
  • Present in creation (Gen. 1:2)
  • Mediator of God's presence everywhere (Psalm 137)
  • Occasional empowerment of specific individuals for specific purposes (Samson, Gideon)
7.3 The Spirit of God and Christ
  • A person, referred to with a masculine pronoun in John 14:26
  • Romans 8:9-11 floats smoothly between Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ--same Spirit.
  • Distinct in Trinitarian expressions: 1 Cor. 12:3-6; 2 Cor. 13:14; Eph. 4:4-6; Matt. 28:18-20
  • God is Spirit (2 Cor. 3:17-18). To say God is a Spirit both 1) suggests that his essence is transcendent and yet 2) suggests that he is everywhere here immanent.
7.4 Functions of the Holy Spirit
